HYC Architect is an architecture and interior design firm established in 2018 and based in Hualien, Taiwan. They specialize in public works and private client projects, with a portfolio that includes office buildings, cultural facilities, and custom homes.
The challenge
Like many small firms, HYC Architect needed to balance software needs with budget. After several years using another CAD software, they wanted to adopt BIM tools to improve project coordination and documentation. But conventional BIM platforms often require expensive licenses and powerful computers.
The solution

“The 2D interface is almost identical to previous CAD software, so there was almost no relearning curve. Only detailed parameter settings required checking the BricsCAD Forum and Learning Center,” explained Huang Yu-Ching, principal architect.
HYC Architect integrated BricsCAD into a hybrid workflow: they develop 2D plans and 3D forms in Rhino in parallel, then use BricsCAD BIM to refine structural dimensions, windows, and custom elements. BricsCAD generates elevations and sections directly from the BIM model, eliminating manual redrawing. For interior projects, they build detailed custom furniture and ceilings in BIM, then use Base Views to create associated drawings for construction documentation.
Interoperability across platforms proved critical. HYC Architect regularly exports BricsCAD models in DWG, IFC, and 3DM formats for client deliverables and quantity verification on public works projects. The team found importing Rhino models into BricsCAD was more complete than in other CAD platforms, eliminating data loss during file exchanges. They also use Communicator for BricsCAD to export BIM models directly for their in-office 3D printer, enabling rapid digital prototyping.
Projects with BricsCAD
Since adopting BricsCAD, HYC Architect has applied the platform across diverse projects in Taiwan. Finished governmental projects include interior renovations of national courtrooms, an agricultural materials laboratory, and a brewing space, as well as designs for a new agricultural equipment storage facility. Past private commercial and residential work includes the Hualien Lin's Dog Pet B&B and Fuli private residence.
Currently, the firm is managing multiple government commissions for new buildings, including a composting facility, the Qixingtan Visitor Center, a rope training center, the Lala-Pa Picture Book Hall, and the Taipower Taitung office building. “I enjoy using the latest version and trying new features. BricsCAD’s online support is also good. The engineers respond to our questions quickly,” noted Huang.
Cost efficiency
